Cloud9 Face Team SoloMid In An LCS/Throwback Double Header This Weekend

Published: Jul 7, 2020

This weekend in the League of Legends LCS Regular season, the unbeaten and unbowed Cloud9 will put their 100% 8-0 record on the line when they take on one of the two teams in joint second place in the table, Team SoloMid.

However, in addition to the big LCS matchup between the teams on July 11, there will also be a special match between two throwback squads of Team SoloMid and Cloud9 players taking place in a special one-off showmatch the day before on July 10.

Cloud 9 LCS Dominance

Having already won the Spring Split and Playoffs, claiming the $100,000 prize in the process and seeing every single tournament award, including all players in the 1st All-Pro Team go to its team, Cloud9 were always likely to be the team to beat in the Summer Split, though few would have expected the team to actually improve on their dominant Spring Split showing.

Since the Summer Split began, Cloud9 have played 8 games and won all eight. They sit at the top of the Group Stage table, two victories clear of two other teams chasing them in second place, Team Liquid and the team that they will face off against this weekend, Team SoloMid.

And fans are eager to see the teams clash after Team SoloMid made a couple of key acquisitions to strengthen their team for the Summer Split.

Team SoloMid Acquisitions

The most exciting acquisition, or perhaps that should be reacquisition, was Team SoloMid re-signing their former star Doublelift. Alongside Bjergsen, Doublelift and his teammate were one of the most feared and talented duos in League of Legends gaming before Doublelift left Team SoloMid to join Team Liquid, where he once again excelled.

However, in April this year Doublelift confirmed he would be making the journey back to Team SoloMid to team up with his old sparring partner Bjergsen once again, along with Broken Blade, BioFrost and the newest team member Spica.

Although the team suffered defeat in the first week of the Summer Split to Team Liquid and then a more surprising Week 2 reverse to FlyQuest, they have won all their other games across the four weeks of action so far, but now the acid test will come against the all-conquering Cloud9.

However, Team SoloMid fans will point out that they were one of the few teams to beat Cloud9 in a game during their success in the Spring Split earlier in the year. All of which points to a hugely exciting contest.

“Iconic” Showmatch to be held prior to LCS Clash

Before the two teams do battle in the LCS for real, there will be a special showmatch between two iconic squads of players from Cloud9 and Team SoloMid teams of the past to celebrate the match up.

So far, the rosters for both teams remain a secret and will be announced next week, although reports are suggesting former players of both teams, along with current roster members, will be part of both teams.

The match will commemorate the LCS Grand Final between Cloud9 and Team SoloMid back in 2013, when despite dominating en-route to the final, Cloud9 beat Team SoloMid in three consecutive games to clinch an unexpected win.

Many fans speculate that players involved in that game from both teams will be announced on the rosters next week.
