Dolby, the California-based audio equipment manufacturing company, is entering the eSports industry.

It will sponsor a $10,000 Overwatch tournament that is taking place at the eSports Arena in Santa Ana, California on May 28 and 29.

Largest prize pool for Overwatch so far

Even though this will not be the first Overwatch LAN event, with Gamers Assembly from France having achieved that feat by organizing the first Overwatch tournament at the end of March this year.

It will, however, be the event with the biggest prize pool in Overwatch history.

The choice of Overwatch as the game to support by Dolby is not as surprising as it may seem. Blizzard’s shooter is the first game that features Dolby’s Atmos technology via headphones, which allows audio to move around in three-dimensional space, similar as in a cinema.

The beta stage of Overwatch has ended recently, but the game has already secured a burgeoning eSports scene around it. Major organizations like Cloud9, Team Liquid, and Team EnVyUs have already created teams, with several others eSports organizations keeping a close eye on the state of competitive play.

The event sponsored by Dolby will happen on May 28 and 29 at the eSports Arena in Santa Ana, California. The event will host some invited teams, with the list of invitees not yet announced. The tournament will also be open to the public where all teams will start from the same point.

Casting will be covered by two of the early pioneers in Overwatch broadcasting, Josh “AskJoshy” Sutherland and Ben “FishStix” Goldhaber.
