When it comes to esports news, they are usually very positive or very critical on a certain topic, but in this case, they are neither of those. Instead, the news is a bit disappointing, yet another esport is coming to an end. Even if Gears Esports was not one of the biggest esports out there, we are sure that it has a lot of fans who are sad that the current season is going to be the last one.
Why is Gears Esports canceled?
The main reason why Gears Esports is getting canceled is that it honestly didn’t do too well when it comes to the standards of the esports industry. This is especially the case when the last two years are taken into concern, where even the biggest esports titles struggled to keep the show going, and for a niche esport like Gears that did not have as near as big of a fan base as League of Legends, CS: GO, or Dota 2, it is not a surprise that this is the last season.
Another reason to see how poorly it performed compared to other titles is in the esports betting industry too. For instance, when CoD betting is compared to betting on Gears, the community difference in terms of size is astronomical. Another thing about CoD is that lately, it has been quite a big competitor to Gears as well, and since it is quite successful, it is another reason for The Coalition just to let go of this one and focus on future projects, which is what they said they are going to do.
At least the final season is going to be played out!
Suppose you have been following esports news in the past few years. In that case, you are probably familiar with the Heroes of the Storm incident where Blizzard decided to drop the game all of the sudden, including its final competitive season. This caused a lot of players to essentially be out of a job, as they were not informed this was going to happen. There were still months of the current HotS season at that time, and it was quite shocking how Blizzard just discarded the game without warning, not to mention that this was before the pandemic!
Either way, enough about Blizzard and their strange decisions, what is there in store for the last season of Gears Esports? As you might know, the last season started off in 2021, hence the reference to it being a 2021/2022 season, and there are only a few tournaments left in it:
- March 26th will mark the Women’s History Month tournament
- April 2nd will be the ASTROBattles 1v1 Major
- April 22-24 will be the Gears Esports Spring Major
- June 24-26 will be the final event, which is Gears Esports Summer Major
What does the future hold for The Coalition?
If you are not familiar with the company behind gears, The Coalition is not really known for any other titles besides gears, as it is only known for Gears of War being their only title for years. The last release of Gears was Gears 5, and this was back in 2019. Since then, The Coalition hinted a few times that they are working on a brand new IP.
Canceling Gears Esports is quite a big deal, and doing such a move hints that their next IP is probably going to be the new era of esports for The Coalition. There is not much known about the new IP, as the only info we have on it is the fact that it is being created in the new amazing Unreal Engine 5, which can pull off some incredible visuals (if you have not seen The Matrix interactive demo by Epic Games’ which The Coalition contributed to, you definitely should!).
Another thing that the Coalition is working on is the rumored Gears 6, but with the news of Gears Esports being canceled, it is probably not going to come out any time soon. If you ask us, our prediction is that it will probably be released after the new IP title that they are working on.
