Playoffs race settled for three?

Let’s start this discussion by focusing on the main narrative and the Standings after Week 1. We have Fnatic, SK Gaming and Team BDS all earning an early 3-0 score line. At 100% win rate their esports odds are looking strong, but the value may be deceptive and an opportunity. Yet, wins are black-and-white – let’s take a closer look at each team:

Fnatic aims for the top this split

Favoured by the esports odds ahead of the split, Fnatic is respected as the second-best LEC team following the Spring season. Their cryptonite has always been G2, and continue to be so. Following a disappointing second-place finish at LEC Spring, the team underwent several changes to the coaching staff. Now bursting with new strategies, this team seems to be tired of finishing second.

However, so far, their record has them taking out inferior competition as listed:

In Week 2, Fnatic will face against SK Gaming, a match to prove their worth with interesting LoL odds.

SK Gaming is upredictable and deadly

Speaking of SK Gaming, this team has come seemingly out of nowhere. Ranked 7th in the pre-match outright odds, their dismal 7th place finish at the LEC Spring 2024 left much to be desired of this team.

So, what changed?

From May 16th onwards, the team underwent a small shuffle, with two new talents sliding into the team. Specifically Cho “Rahel” Min-seong and Lee “Luon” Hyun-ho from Korea have breathed new life into this team and now they look deadly.

Moreover, they’ve proved their worth after taking down the likes of G2 Esports in Week 1:

Nobody expected such a massive turnaround so quickly. Next week, as we mentioned, they’ll face Fnatic in a tight battle for first and in addition, they face Team BDS!

Team BDS are masters of consistency

Another team benefitting from the downfall of G2 Esports, Team BDS has kept a clean sheet in LEC Summer Week 1 and is on track to finish well.

Historically always finishing within the top 3, Team BDS has always been a tier beneath G2 Esports, Fnatic or whatever team ends up finishing first. Most recently, they finished in a respectable third place at the LEC Spring Playoffs.

Maintaining this consistency, they haven’t made any changes since then and have simply gotten better with time. Here’s how they’ve ended up in this title race:

For the first time in a while, perhaps Team BDS can jump into first place if they manage to take down SK Gaming next week.

What is going on with G2 Esports?

Sure, there are some other stories to consider, such as Karmine Corp finding early success and Team Vitality regressing massively, but there’s one story on everyone’s mind – what happened to G2 Esports?

Favored by League of Legends betting sites and their incredible record in the local scene, the community has been surprised by their starting performance so far:

Speculation from the community offers several interesting theories.

Firstly, there are those pointing out that perhaps this team is fatigued after their long campaign at MSI 2024 where they placed an impressive 4th place. Others have commented that G2 have been slow to adapt to patch 14.11.

In our opinion, it’s still too early to rule out these international contenders. Let’s not forget that in LEC Spring 2024, they also had a slow start which had them losing early to Fnatic.

If they want to guarantee a Playoffs spot, they’ll need to start putting in the work as soon as possible.
