LoL Worlds Championship 2021 Moved from China to Europe
The past two years have been tough on everyone. Like everywhere else, esports suffered greatly and tournament organizers weren’t able to plan things like they used to. With no live audience, and thus no point in organising live events, esports transitioned to tournaments being played almost entirely online. For this reason, the fans of esports have been hungry for a real live event for quite a while.
We first saw Dota 2 The International 10 being delayed and then switching locations, but now we learn that this year’s LoL Worlds Championship 2021 has been moved from China to Europe. According to Riot, it was a difficult decision, but one that ultimately had to be made due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and stricter measures that are being implemented by the day. This might be a blessing in disguise for the European fans, but the Chinese fans will surely be quite disappointed.
What led to this?
According to some reports, there were a lot of issues in regards to travel from other countries to China. Keep in mind that different variants of Covid-19 have appeared, including the new Delta variant, which has put world governments on high alert once again.
There must have been plenty of other things and various complications that have caused Riot to change their plans with a heavy heart. China was supposed to be the back-to-back host for LoL Worlds, but alas that won’t be the case.
The event was supposed to be held across several large cities in China, with finals being played in Shenzhen.
John Needham, the Global Head of Esports at Riot Games, broke the news on the LoL esports Twitter page, and in his short video, he gave an update where he explained the entire situation and confirmed that LoL Worlds Championship 2021 would be moving to Europe. He also sincerely thanked the five chosen cities in China for all their support in the entire project and apologized to the Chinese fans.
In the end, although this news came as a tough blow, it’s important to recognize that the event will still be held, although in a different location. This will ensure that all the teams and fans have the best shot at participating, which is the most important thing in this case.
Great news for Europe
This move will require Riot Games to double their efforts and make sure that everything works out properly. The LoL Worlds event is now confirmed to be moving to Europe, but we still don’t have the full picture. There’s no information about the exact location of the LoL esports tournament nor do we know the entire LoL Worlds schedule.
One thing’s certain, though. This year’s LoL Worlds will still be a true spectacle. The fans will be able to witness the best League of Legends teams competing at the highest level. Not only that, but LoL betting will certainly spike as well.
Overall, the good news is that the LoL Worlds Championship is still happening. There’s a lot of LoL matches to be played before we know exactly which teams will be participating. Until then, we’ll anxiously wait for more information from Riot Games.
