Louis Vuitton to design LoL Worlds trophy case
In one of the more unusual esports sponsorship deals, it has been announced that Louis Vuitton will be partnering up with Riot Games. The French fashion house will be designing a trophy travel case for the Summoner’s Cup.
It comes at a time where Riot Games are building up the hype ahead of the next LoL Worlds tournament. The esports competition will take place in Paris, France with the grand finale on 10 November 2019.
FIRST EVER CUSTOM CASE FOR THE SUMMONER’S CUP
Given that Louis Vuitton are famous for their high-concept fashion, it’s little surprise to find that their designs for the trophy case are typically outlandish. A press release stated that the travel case for the Summoner’s Cup will ‘feature both traditional Louis Vuitton savoir faire along with cutting edge, high-tech elements inspired by the League of Legends universe.’
First glimpses of an artist’s impression of the case seems to show a chic patterned design with deluxe gold corner guards and rich wooden edges. The bespoke trunk will hold the trophy and will also be presented to the winning team. It will be the first time that the League of Legends World Championship trophy has had any kind of custom case.

SPECIAL CHAMPION SKINS FOR LOL WORLDS
Louis Vuitton will also be giving LoL players special champion skins and a capsule collection for the tournament. These will be designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere who is the artistic director of women’s collections at the fashion house. It has been suggested that these will be just the first of a wave of League of Legends assets to be created by Louis Vuitton.
The partnership between Louis Vuitton and Riot Games marks the first time that a luxury fashion house has entered the world of esports. A spokesman for Louis Vuitton stated that the brand had ‘long been associated with the world’s most coveted trophies,’ and that they were ‘thrilled to be part of such an iconic event.’
Previously we have seen Louis Vuitton designing similar trophy cases for traditional sports tournaments like the FIFA World Cup and the Rugby World Cup. But the fashion house will be boosting its profile among a brand new demographic by partnering up with Riot Games.
THE BIGGEST LOL WORLDS EVER?
The last edition of the League of Legends World Championship was watched by more people than the Super Bowl last year. While the average gamer is unlikely to have the pocket money necessary to splash out on Louis Vuitton’s haute couture, it’s still a bold move from the fashion house.
The LoL Worlds tournament will begin on 2 October with the play-off rounds. There will be a total of 24 teams from the 13 different regional leagues taking part in the event. Although other European cities like Berlin and Madrid will host various stages of the competition, the final will take place in Paris – the home of Louis Vuitton. All of which should make for the classiest edition of LoL Worlds yet.
