MSI 2023: Lower Bracket Round 2 Prediction – Gen.G vs Cloud9

After Bilibili Gaming eliminated G2 Esports in the other MSI 2023 lower bracket matchup, now Korea’s Gen.G and North America’s Cloud9 will battle it out to decide which side will face them. Played across a best-of-five series, the winner will progress while the loser will be sent home.

May 17th 2023: Gen.G vs Cloud9 (14:00 CEST)

Gen.G vs Cloud9

Despite qualifying for MSI as Korea’s first seed by beating T1 in the LCK Spring playoffs, Gen.G dramatically lost to their national rivals in their MSI rematch in a thrilling five-game series. Having initially gone down 2-0, Gen.G bravely fought back to 2-2 and brought the very real possibility of a reverse sweep only to fall at the final hurdle and move down to the lower bracket.

They’ll be up against LCS Spring champions Cloud9, who dropped to the lower bracket earlier in the tournament when they lost 3-0 to Bilibili Gaming but successfully navigated their way through so far by beating Golden Guardians 3-1 in their own regional rematch.

The NA hopefuls will undoubtedly come into this one as big underdogs. They’re up against a goliath in Gen.G, one that has won back-to-back Korean titles and features some of the world’s scariest names. While C9 mid-lander EMENES has been a solid player for them since he joined the starting roster mid-split, he’s up against arguably the best mid-laner in the world in the form of Chovy. The former-Griffin man is still itching to grab his first international title and will be as motivated as ever to perform on the big stage.

It doesn’t get much better for C9 in other lanes either, with Gen.G arguably the stronger across the board. I personally can’t see anything other than a Gen.G stomp here. The Koreans will expect a 3-0 and I’m right there with them – even a single game for Cloud9 will be an upset.

Prediction: Gen.G 3-0 Cloud9
