New NBA 2K20 Global Championship to Start in October

Published: Sep 23, 2019 - Last Updated: Feb 4, 2021

The developers behind one of the top basketball simulation games, 2K Games, have announced that they will partner with ESL, the NBA and the NBPA to create a brand-new tournament for NBA 2K players. That tournament will be the NBA 2K20 Global Championship.

Scheduled to start in October 2019, the tournament features over $100,000 in prize money to be won, with players across the globe able to participate in both offline and online qualifying events, which are slated to get underway throughout October.

The winners of these events will qualify for the regional finals, which will take place at the ESL studios located in Los Angeles, Paris and Sydney. The winner of these regional finals will pocket $15,000 in cash, as well as a number of as yet undisclosed prizes courtesy of the NBA and 2K Games.

A Finals event is slated to take place at an as yet unnamed venue in the United States from Feb 22 2020.

Amateur Focus

Rather than focus on professional players competing at the level of those that have been drafted into teams for the official NBA 2K league, this new tournament will focus not only on players from outside the core group of players from North America, but will also be available to amateur players too.

This means that anybody with an interest in NBA2K Esports can put their name down to participate in a regional qualifier to see how they perform.

As the Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations at 2K Sports, Jason Argent, stated:

“We’re excited to partner with the NBA, NBPA and ESL to create this first-of-its-kind tournament for NBA 2K. For anyone who is interested to test how their skills match up on a global scale, we encourage you to register and see if you truly have what it takes to become the best head-to-head player in the world.”

Josh Goodstatd, the EVP of Licensing for the NBPA also endorsed the new tournament by adding:

“We are thrilled to be working with these partners in creating this milestone event in gaming. Our players come from all over the world and this is a unique experience which will allow fans from every corner of the globe to engage and compete with them through NBA 2K.”

Game Mode

This new esports tournament will operate in a different. Game Mode to the NBA 2K pro league. In the pro league, teams have drafted professional players to play in the five specific positions in a basketball team, so a team consists of five individual players.

In the NBA 2K20 Global Championship, one player will control an entire team, meaning that matches are a head-to-head basis, a system which offers more opportunity for players, who are much more likely to have experienced this type of play on NBA 2K, rather than five-player team play.

The NBA 2K Esports League has been a huge success with the Minnesota-based T-Wolves Gaming team being crowned the 2019 Champions defeating the 76ers 3-2 in the best-of-five League Finals.
