PUBG PGS 2024 Phase 3 Insights – Daily Top Performers & Flops
On the path to the Global Championship 2024, the PGS 2024 Phase 3 is a halfway point in the 2024 season. Kicking off in Shanghai, we collate our very own daily PGS 2024 Phase 3 Insights for the early days of competition – let’s dive right in!
PGS 2024 Phase 3 – Pre-Event Favorites
Ahead of the tournament, several teams stood out as favourites thanks to their strong history and recent performances (with positive esports odds) as exemplified by the following:
- Soniqs – favourites from the Americas, Soniqs are the defending regional champions after winning the past couple seasons of the PUBG Continenal Series Americas. Beyond that, they won the last PUBG Global Series 2023 Phase 2, barely pinching it over Twisted Minds.
- Twisted Minds – this European organization has stormed onto the scene, using funds to form a super team of sorts. Since forming, they’ve placed in the top 3 at the last few PUBG Global Championships and in 2024 have been the defending champions of EMEA.
- NewHappy – as the leading name from China, they remain one of the few teams to secure four Chicken dinners at the PUBG Global Championship. Most recently, they walked away as the winners of the PUBG Champions League 2024 Spring and are looking sharper than ever.
Day 1 – Leading Teams
Here’s a look at how the teams currently stack up after Day 1 of competition. Split into three groups of eight, the first day of the PGS 2024 Phase 3 saw Group A face Group B. Let’s look at all three groups as a reminder:
PGS 2024 Phase 3 Groups | Teams |
---|---|
A | Soniqs, Natus Vincere, FaZe Clan, eArena, Armory Gaming, Freecs, Legacy, Weibo Gaming |
B | Twisted Minds, Four Angry Men, Gen.G Esports, BLEED Esports, Valee Thai Esports, TSM, Dplus, NewHappy |
C | 17 Gaming, CERBERUS Esports, Daytrade Gaming, Petrichor Road, Virtus.pro, HOWL Esports, GNL ESPORTS, Team Falcons |
Moreover, Day 1 saw 6 rounds of competition, here’s how the top 5 teams ranked based on points weighed by frags and placement:
- Twisted Minds – 58 points
- Gen.G – 53 points
- Soniqs – 47 points
- Valee Thai Esports – 43 points
- NewHappy – 39 points
As we mentioned prior, Twisted Minds placing first is no surprise to us. Beyond placement, they are dominating in the kills department, leading after Day 1 with 9 kills more than second place.
Speaking of second place, Gen.G has come out of nowhere. After destroying the team in September 2023, a brand new team was signed in January of this year with no idea what the ceiling could be for this new roster. So far, Gen.G is looking impressive, securing one Chicken Dinner while remaining consistent.
Soniqs are exactly where we’d expect them after the opening round. Despite some shaky performances in Round 1 and 6, their Chicken Dinner in Round 3 and second place finish in Round 4 have pushed them into third place.
Meanwhile, fourth place has a curious team from the Asia Pacific Qualifier which not many people are sure about – Valee Thai Esports from Thailand shocked the community with their win in Round 6.
Not everyone is meeting expectations
Although some teams have taken the opportunity to jump ahead, some teams are lagging behind. We found three teams that we recommend keeping an eye on as they could potentially turn things around:
- FaZe Clan – a consistent performance, FaZe has had a few great rounds, breaking into second place once. However, Round 2 saw them finish in 16th with no kills, a performance which stuck them into 8th to begin with.
- Four Angry Men – outside of NewHappy, Four Angry Men is the other PUBG powerhouse from China. Sure, they’ve placed fourth twice, but other than that, its been a series of disappointing finishes outside of the top 10.
- EArena – Round 4 was perhaps one of the most interesting rounds of competition. Against all odds, Arena, an unknown team from Thailand, managed to claim the Chicken dinner above favourites such as Soniqs, Gen.G and FaZe. Outside of that though, they’ve placed 15th twice and sit in 11th place.
Overall, at PGS 2024 Phase 3, old favorites have returned, Thailand is a surprising region with surprising teams and Twisted Minds is still on top.
