League of Legends Overview
Before diving into Fantasy LoL, let’s first understand the League of Legends game. League of Legends (LoL) is a MOBA game played between teams consisting of five players. The objective is taking down the opposing team’s base, known as Nexus. LoL takes its course in a squared-shape virtual battle arena, with each team’s base located on the map at the southwest and northeast corners.
You’ll find three dedicated lanes on the map with three defensive towers each. These towers must be destroyed before a team storms to the other’s territory to destroy Nexus.
Each player in the team will have a role to play, whether it is to push lanes, destroy towers, provide long-range tactical cover or support, or roam the jungle to capture power-ups.
What is Fantasy League of Legends?
LoL Esports fantasy works like other fantasy esports, where players create teams to compete against each other. One thing you notice at Fantasy LoL is that you’ll not be betting against a sportsbook but against other players or friends in LoL leagues and tournaments, which makes it more exciting.
You’ll invite friends in a league and hold a draft to pick a team of five professional LoL players with unique abilities for each role we mentioned. The teams will then compete in daily, weekly, or season-long contests, with each team accumulating points based on their players’ in-game performances. The team with the most points wins the contest.
What a Fantasy LoL Team Looks Like
Your team must have five player and these five players will play different roles, such as destroying towers, killing the opposing team, and assisting a kill. But like other fantasy games and sports, you must remain within a salary cap while drafting your lineup. The positions to fill are as follows:
- Top laner (TOP)
- Jungler (JUN)
- Mid laner (MID)
- Bot laner (BOT)
- Support (SUP)
In addition, you’ll fill two more roles: Captain and Team. The Captain will be the ace of the team, with his salary higher than other players, but guarantees 1.5x more points for every action.
The team earns points differently from how players score theirs. The points here are based on win/loss records and completing objectives like dragons, Barons, turrets, and first blood.
Here are the points earned by individual players and the team for each objective at fantasy Esports: League of Legends:
Players
Statistic | Fantasy Points (Captain earns 1.5x fantasy points values) |
---|---|
Kills | +3 pts |
Assists | +2 pts |
Deaths | -1 pt |
Creep Score | +0.02 pts for each minion kills |
10 K/A | +2 pts (10 kills or assists in a single game) |
Teams
Statistic | Fantasy Points (Captain earns 1.5x fantasy points values) |
---|---|
Barons | +3 pts |
Dragons | +2 pts |
Turrets | +1 pt |
First blood | +2 pts |
Win | +2 pts |
Bonus for winning in under 30 minutes | +2 pts |
How Fantasy League of Legends Works
Playing Fantasy Esports: League of Legends is straightforward. It all begins with setting up your account at top DFS providers like DraftKings, FanDuel, and Sleeper. Once signed up, go to the fantasy section and choose League of Legends to access the different contests. Then, draft your lineup and score points through your players’ performances to win prizes.
At DFS platforms like Sleeper, you can compete in a fantasy LoL league that runs twice a year, from January to April and June to November, or a LoL fantasy league.
If you prefer a fantasy league, you’ll join a league or create one to compete against friends. Each league has rules, a point-scoring system, and entry fees you must familiarize yourself with. In addition, you’ll have a salary cap in which you create your League of Legends fantasy draft of five players. The in-game performances of these players determine the team’s score. Popular fantasy LoL leagues include:
- League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK)
- League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC)
- League of Legends Championship Series (LCS)
In the above leagues, you’ll draft a team of professional LoL players who compete against each other players’ teams in official matches. The team scores points based on how many kills, assists, deaths, and creep kills.
If you prefer DraftKings fantasy LoL, you are in for multiple options, including free-to-play contests for new users and beginners. Since there are no season-long contests, fantasy LoL players at DraftKings will pick their teams at the start of Spring and Summer and can reset them with each passing split.
As there are daily contests, you can draft a new roster within minutes and compete in the various fantasy LoL tournaments. Besides daily contests, you can compete against players with similar skills or hold private competitions among friends – this is much like playing Fantasy Counter Strike.
Our Tips to Play LoL Esports Fantasy
To play Fantasy LoL, you need a few tips to ensure you make a perfect draft and potentially win prizes. Here are a few of them:
- Research LoL players to find information on their past performances, current form, and unique abilities. This will help you choose those who will make a big impact on your team.
- Choose the right contest to join. Platforms like DraftKings have many fantasy LoL contests to join, including free-to-play contests. As a first-timer, beginner-friendly tournaments are the way to go as you gain basics before leveling up to head-to-head contests.
- Understand the point-scoring system to know how individuals pick up or lose points (kills, assists, creep kills, and deaths) and how your team picks up points (destroying turrets, dragons, and barons), with bonus points for wins and first bloods.
- Create a perfect lineup by prioritizing specific draft positions. For example, Bot and Mid-laners tend to rack up lots of points, calling for you to make great purchases in the positions. On the contrary, you do not need to break the bank for the Support and Jungler positions.
