Worlds 2024 Play-In Predictions Day 3 – MDK vs PSG, GAM vs R7

The League of Legends 2024 World Championship is here, kicking things off with the Play-In stage. Here eight teams from “weaker” regions vie for four Swiss Stage spots, decided through a double-elimination bracket where teams that reach two wins will progress.

Movistar R7 vs paiN Gaming

Despite a historic win over 100 Thieves to open their Worlds campaign, it all fell apart for Movistar R7 against GAM and now they have to pick up the pieces. Jungler Oddie was devastated after the series, and tilt could be a serious factor in their final chance to stay in the competition.

Despite finding themselves in the same do-or-die position, Brazil’s paiN Gaming enters the matchup with positive momentum having just beaten Vikings to get here. They’ll be much happier entering the series with R7 where both regions hope to earn a rare taste of the Worlds main event.

Prediction: R7 2-1 PNG (4.80)

While paiN might have the momentum, R7 has arguably the strongest player in the series with top laner Summit, and he could be all the difference. If R7 does win it, which I fancy them doing with a 2-1 scoreline, then it will have to include a map 1 victory (2.50) to avoid building on the negative momentum from their last loss.

PSG Talon vs 100 Thieves

Billed as the best team in Play-Ins, PSG were perhaps unfortunate to play MDK in their last series, who were considered second best. Now they must play another tough Play-Ins team to survive, though they will definitely enter the series against 100 Thieves as the favourites.

The North American team were left licking their wounds after their shock-opening defeat to R7, but looked extremely comfortable in their subsequent victory over SHG. They’ll need to be on top form again to beat PSG.

Prediction: PSG 2-0 100 (2.70)

I think PSG’s superior international calibre with the likes of Maple and Betty on their roster will be too much for 100T. While I can imagine a nervy opening game that lasts beyond 35 minutes (2.80) do expect PSG to take it, then use their momentum to close out a 2-0 win (2.70) and book their place in the Swiss stage.
