Throughout the years, esports tournaments tend to struggle to build on viewership statistics for several reasons.

For example, Dota’s The International has stagnated slightly over the years – what about LoL Worlds?

Here’s a look at the peak viewership of the most viewed LoL tournaments events ever according to Esports Charts:

RankingLoL TournamentPeak Viewership
#12023 World Championship6,402,760
#22022 World Championship5,147,701
#32021 World Championship4,018,728
#42019 World Championship3,981,706
#52020 World Championship3,884,667

Year after year, LoL Worlds viewership has increased, an impressive feat by Riot Games. In addition, the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 racked up the highest peak viewership for this tournament ever.

Although overlooked, the size of the in-person crowd also influences the excitement surrounding a tournament.

Here’s a look at the venue capacities for LoL Worlds since 2020:

LoL Worlds 2024 – Riot Needs T1?

At the time of writing, Worlds 2024 has registered a peak viewership of 2,820,371 viewers.

Moreover, the top 3 watched matches all involved the most popular team in the world – LCK’s T1.

It’s no secret that T1’s huge fanbase contributes heavily to LoL viewership and LoL Worlds betting. For example, the all-time record achieved at the LoL Worlds 2023 Grand Final involved T1 taking on Weibo Gaming.

This is also true for MSI 2024 (the most watched MSI ever) where T1’s match against BLG in the Lower Bracket Finals contributed to the peak viewership record at that tournament.

In addition, T1 was also involved in the LoL Worlds 2022 Grand Final, when they didn’t win.

Accordingly, we’re curious to see what would happen to the LoL Worlds viewership if T1 didn’t make it out of the Swiss Stage for example. However, considering T1’s recent form, they are favourites to make it to at least the Playoffs.

Bearing this in mind, we wouldn’t be surprised to see more LoL Worlds viewership records smashed this year with the LoL Worlds Grand Final likely to achieve this.
