What is LPL Spring Split 2022?

The LPL Spring Split 2022 is the first split of the 10th edition of China’s professional League of Legends league. With a total of 17 participants, it is the largest out of all the domestic League of Legends tournaments. The winner of the playoffs will become the LPL Spring Split 2022 champion and will represent the region at the Mid-Season Invitational.

LPL Spring Split Schedule for 2022

The regular season of the LPL Spring Split 2022 begins earlier compared to all the other major regions. The split officially starts on Jan. 10 and continues until Mar. 20 2022, with a total of 9 weeks of action. There’s only one break during the tournament, as the Chinese teams will stop playing for two weeks between Weeks 3 and 4 for the Chinese New Year.

As for the LPL Spring Playoffs, there isn’t a confirmed date yet. With that being said, however, we can expect them, based on last year’s LPL Spring Schedule, to start almost right after the regular split ends. Last year, the playoffs began three days after the last day of week 9, so TJ Esports (the tournament organizers) should make a similar decision for this year. The whole stage should last about 2 weeks and a half, as teams play almost every day. There’s only one small break prior to the LPL Spring Finals, so teams have some time to rest and make better preparation for the most important series of the split.

Spring Split 2022 Format

To accommodate all the 17 teams, the LPL has a slightly different format compared to the other regions. First of all, the 17 teams compete in Best-of-3 series only once against every other team. At the end of the split, the top 10 teams will then qualify for playoffs based on their seedings. In the case of two teams with the same number of series won, the tiebreaker is then based on game differential (first) and then the Head-to-Head record (second).

The Playoffs format has changed many times throughout the years, but the format used last year will also be implemented for the 2022 season. The LPL Spring Playoffs are divided into two Phases.

Phase 1 consists of Round 1 to Round 3, with a Two King of the Hill single elimination bracket. Seeds 4/5/8/9 will be put in one bracket, with the remaining seeds 3/6/7/10 falling into the other one. All matches will be Best-of-5s.

Phase 2, on the other hand, becomes a double elimination bracket. The winner of bracket number 1 (seeds 4/5/8/9) will go up against the number 1 seed from the regular season, with the winner of the other bracket facing seed number 2. This means that teams can have a second chance to redeem themselves even if they lose one series. The two teams left will fight each other in the Finals, where the winner qualifies for the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational.

It is also worth noting that the top 8 teams in playoffs will earn championship points. The winners will earn 90 points and it decreases down to 10 points for the 7-8th positions. While it is not meaningful for the LPL Spring Split, championship points will matter for the second part of the season.

Who are the LPL Spring Favorites?

The LPL is the home of some of the most recent World Champions. This is because the average level of competition in the Chinese region is one of, if not, the highest in the world. Every year, the LPL has at least 4 or 5 teams that have the potential to win the championship and this year is no exception.

We’re not going to make a full analysis here because we have a dedicated section just for the LPL teams. Nevertheless, the favorites in the LPL this year are LNG Esports, Royal Never Give Up, Edward Gaming, and BiliBili Gaming. To know every detail about each participant in the LPL, you can check out our LPL Power Rankings.

What about the LPL Underdogs?

It is very hard to pinpoint all the underdogs since every year Chinese teams can make very big changes to their rosters and coaching staff. This year, however, the LPL has a very clear strong top half, making it hard for bottom-tier teams to surprise and impress. With this in mind, the LPL “underdogs” this year are the teams that still belong to the top 10 but can make an exploit during the split and once playoffs are around. In 2022, teams like Weibo Gaming, Victory Five, Top Esports are ones to watch out for.

When there are matches that include LPL Spring favorites vs underdogs, it becomes harder to make the correct bets since the outcome can be very unpredictable. Nonetheless, our LPL Power Rankings also give you the analysis of the key strengths and core members of each team so you are also ready for these trickier series.
