Unikrn is one of the newest and most innovative gambling sites on the Internet today.
Founded by Rahul Sood and Karl Flores, Unikrn is not strictly a sportsbook in the same way that sites like Bet365, Betway or William Hill are. Instead, Unikrn focuses solely on providing books and betting markets on eSports.
Unikrn Betting Review
- eSports Offered
- Customer Service
- Deposit Options
- Player Value
Unikrn is perhaps the world’s first eSports book – a site dedicated wholly to betting on eSports alone. That gives the site an interesting product that will appeal to eSports fans, and ensures that the site offers one of the widest selections of ways to bet on eSports.
In addition to real-money betting, you’ll also find a variety of choices for wagering with virtual currency on Unikrn. Roll it all together and you’ve got a unique eSports betting option that should be on the radar of all players.
As a relatively new site and with no other sports betting on the site, Unikrn is very much aimed at the niche market of eSports betting and like most other sites offering these bets, they focus predominantly on the top eSports games and major eSports tournaments or events held worldwide.
Compared to other sports betting sites, Unikrn is a very small outfit and still very much in its infancy, but as the market for eSports betting continues to grow, its expertise in this field may well stand it in good stead against bigger sites. Especially those that may lack the gamers perspective on what makes eSports such an exciting and vibrant topic for betting, as well as gaming.
eSports Activity Level
What eSports can I bet on?
Like most sites that offer eSports betting, the types of games that you can bet on with Unikrn does vary from day to day dependent upon the matches that are taking place over the next 24-48 hour period. However, under the Games tab on the website at the moment the site offers the opportunity to bet on at least three major eSports games at present.
These are the every popular League of Legends including matches from a wide range of different series and tournaments from across the globe including North America, Europe, Australia and the Far East. What is particularly notable is that there are more match ups available each day on Unikrn than on non-specialised sports betting sites that offer eSports (such as William Hill or Bet365).
Other eSports available on the site include the popular DOTA2 with another wide range of games from across the globe available to bet on and the other game the site offers betting on at the time of writing is Counter Strike: GO, although there are not as many bets available for this eSport compared to DOTA2 or LoL.
However, on the front page of Unikrn the site also lists three more eSports, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone and Starcraft 2, and it seems likely that the site will soon expand its betting markets to include these eSports in the near future.
What kinds of bet are offered on eSports?
At the moment there is only two forms of bet offered on Unikrn on all eSports markets and they are to bet on which team will be the overall winner of a key eSports tournament and most popularly, which of the two teams competing in the stated eSport will win the contest.
Odds are stated as decimal odds and you simply click on the odds of the team you want to back to win to add them to your betting slip. Once you have don’t that, you simply enter your chosen stake amount and place the bet by clicking the button.
You can however put several single selections together on a coupon and place a multiple bet. Once again, the betting options are simple, you can either place a single bet on each of the selections you make, or a single accumulator bet consisting of all the selections on your coupon in a single bet.
The odds of the accumulator are shown in the Total Odds section of the bet slip and once you enter your chosen stake, you can see your potential winnings displayed underneath the total odds.
What special features or promotions are offered for eSports bettors?
Given that Unikrn is dedicated to eSports, one of the most exciting features for eSports fans is that there are a number of articles available on the site pertaining to eSports. These articles are both focused on an eSports and betting perspective and allow users to learn a little about the prospective match ups and the teams that are likely to feature strongly in them.
While there are no promotions for eSports on the site as yet, the fact that there are articles about the eSports on the site, plus a fantastic live streaming service which showcases many eSports clashes from around the globe each day, means that Unikrn offers a specific and detailed eSports betting service for its customers.
If you are basing this review on offering eSports alongside other sports betting, then Unikrn would score very low. However seeing as our main focus is eSports, Unikrn’s site does a fantastic job. Betting on the site is easy to follow and simple to do and there is a large number of markets for each eSport available. The addition of articles to the site also gives the customer a feeling that Unikrn really knows and understands this market. It could still improve with perhaps more eSports available, more betting options and some promotions, but all in all, this is an excellent start for this eSports specific site.
Unikrn Opening Offer for New Customers
At the moment Unikrn do not have any opening offer in place for new customers.
How do I Deposit or Withdraw cash from Unikrn?
As a relatively new site, Unikrn currently only offers somewhat limited options for funding and withdrawing from an accont.
Deposits – Deposits can be made using a credit card (Visa or Mastercard)
Withdrawals – All withdrawals from an account must be made with the same credit card that funded the account.
What mobile options are available on Unikrn?
You can access Unikrn on a wide range of mobile devices, however you can only do so in one way at the time this review was compiled.
There is no downloadable app available for Unikrn on iOS at the moment, however people with an iPhone or iPad can access the mobile version of the site by visiting Unikrn.com via their mobile browser.
As with the iOS phones and tablets, there is no specific Android-based app available for Android phones and tablets for Unikrn at present, but users can access the site via a browser.
Betting using Unikoins
In addition to real money betting, Unikrn has created a virtual currency called “Unikoins” to allow people in any country to wager on eSports.
Unikoin bets are the only form of eSports gambling available at Unikrn for people outside the few nations they service, as well as for people in the countries where online gambling is illegal (such as the United States).
What is the Purpose of Unikoins?
Unikrn currently acts as a real money eSports bookmaker to the following countries:
- New Zealand
- The U.K.
Unikoins are a stand-in for real money outside of those countries. Unikoins also enable users as young as 13 years old to bet on eSports, which can be seen as either a good or bad thing depending on your age.
Additionally, Unikoins can be used for practice by people in any of the above four countries. They can familiarize themselves with the betting process by using Unikoins before risking their money.
Unikoins are earned in the following ways:
- Completing the website’s tutorial.
- Winning bets on eSports matches.
- Referring friends to Unikrn.
- Completing daily “quests.”
The site’s tutorial is very informative and should be completed by anyone interested in Unikrn to begin with.
The “quests” they give are usually to post a bet to Facebook, or to answer some video game related question correctly (such as “how much does the Desert Eagle cost in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive?”). Quests can also be as simple as to place a single bet. Bets of a single Unikoin can be made to earn the 8 or 10 Unikoins offered as a reward.
Games Available at Unikrn with Unikoin betting
The following games are listed as available to wager on:
- Call of Duty (franchise)
- Dota 2
- League of Legends
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Starcraft 2
The site features large icons representing each game on its homepage, and a small overlay saying “live now” conveniently appears over each when there is an ongoing live event.
Continuously earning a valueless virtual currency to no end would become boring even for the most avid eSports fan. For that reason, Unikrn allows people to win prizes with their Unikoins.
Users can enter into a raffle in which the more Unikoins put forth, the higher the odds are of winning.
They calculate the odds of winning a prize with the current pool in mind (obviously the odds change with more entrants). Prizes include some of the following:
- Daily Funko doll giveaways.
- Gift cards (often worth 5-10 dollars at various retailers).
- eSports merchandise, such as pro-team mousepads.
- Weekly drawings for medium-sized prizes, such as an Alienware “Vindicator” backpack.
- Monthly drawings for larger prizes such as the “HP Omen” gaming laptop.
What Unikoin Gets Right
Unikoins are a fantastic entry point for people unfamiliar with traditional betting. They enable risk-free wagering with the slight upside of possible prizes. Unikoin seems particularly ideal for teenaged users who would feel an allure at the idea of being able to bet and actually win something.
The site itself is attractive, the tutorial is excellent, and the daily quests are appropriately themed. It’s also appreciated that Facebook integration is an option rather than a necessity, because a requirement to post to Facebook can be annoying.
The actual gambling is handled beautifully, with zero confusion as to how much a person can potentially win.
What Unikoin Is Missing
There are simply not enough prizes to make Unikoins worth seeking out. As of this writing, there are only five prizes listed on the site.
Each raffle takes many hours to complete and a similar length of time to reset for a new prize. One prize slot for a mousepad is listed as “won” as of this writing, and will reset with a new prize in 8 hours. Another slot is taken by a Funko doll, with its ongoing raffle commencing in 8 hours.
The two most valuable prizes, a gaming laptop and an Alienware backpack, can only be won in either a full month’s time, or six days from now, respectively. The prizes are all recognizable name brand goods which appeal to people who enjoy video games, but the scarcity of prizes makes the entire experience feel cheap.
Possible Changes to Make Unikoins More Appealing
To make Unikoin more appealing, some of the following should be done:
- Offer higher quality prizes, and more frequently. Five prize slots with 8 hour waits for daily prizes is too long, particularly when the dolls on offer are valued at $9.99 USD.
- Enable the exchange of Unikoins for cosmetic items in CS:GO and Dota 2.
- Allow Unikoins to be exchanged for in-game currencies, such as gems in Smite.
Cosmetic content for games like Dota 2 and CS:GO is highly sought by gamers. The entire viability of Dota 2’s massive tournaments hinges on the popularity of their cosmetic content sales and exchanges. Many sites already have Steam integration, including fantasy eSports site Vulcun, so implementing something similar should be considered.
In the same vein, the Electronic Sports League (ESL) has their own Smite fantasy league setup which offers the gems from Smite as possible rewards. Gems are used to acquire new hero characters for a player’s account, so these have value to people who play Smite. There are also similar examples for other games.
There just isn’t enough incentive to use Unikrn’s Unikoin betting for anything other than personal gratification.
The lackluster prizes can also only be won, and not exchanged for directly. A person might theoretically save 4,000 Unikoins to win a Funko doll, and they still are not guaranteed to win. It wouldn’t be bad that there were raffles if there were many prizes being offered all the time, but that’s simply not the case.
Furthermore, there are many alternatives to using Unikoins. While not the same as traditional wagering, fantasy eSports sites Alpha Draft and Vulcun enable people to win real money, which can then be used to buy as many dolls or mousepads as a person wants.
Vulcun also offers their own virtual currency which can be exchanged for weapon skins in Counter-Strike:Global Offensive. Steam integrated sites like csgolounge and dota2lounge also enable users to wager for cosmetic items. As of now, as odd as it seems, Unikoins really only appeal to teenaged eSports fans who don’t want to risk any money.
